Google Assistant for Windows 7 & 10 – Download & Install

Google’s Artificial intelligence-powered assistant, also known as Google Assistant, is available for Android and Apple devices. The Google Assistant can start various apps and devices, carry out many tasks, can help to answer questions and play games. It is a very handy tool even when if you do not have smart speakers and home devices.  It is available in about 30 languages.  Nowadays, all Android phones come with Google Assistant  preinstalled. On Pixel phones, it is built into the operating systems.  In fact, like Amazon’s Alexa, Siri, Cortona, etc., Google Assistant has made a name for itself. The minus point is that there is no desktop version available.  However, the Google Assistant SDK helps to run it on Windows, Mac, Linux, etc. Here is the complete guide on how to install Google Assistant for Windows 7 & 10.

To install the Goggle Assistant on Windows PC, 7 &10, a few prerequisites are needed. Python 3 should be installed in the system if you are using Windows7 & 10. For Mac and Linux, Python 3 is already installed. To install Python 3.x on Windows, the procedure is very simple.  Firstly, download the Python 3.x on the PC and then run the python.exe file.  Customize the installation and checkmark all the optional features which are required.  It takes a few seconds to install Python on the PC, and then the PC needs to be restarted.

Steps to Install Google Assistant:

  1. On the Windows computer, go to the Google Cloud Platform Console website
  2. Click on the Create Project button and type a suitable name and click on ‘Create.’
  3. After that, click on the ‘bell’ icon and select the project.
  4. Go to APIs & services section and then to ‘Library.’ Here, from the search bar, search for Google Assistant.  Select the Google Assistant API and click on the ‘Enable’ button.
  5. Importantly on the right-hand side, there is the ‘Credentials’ option.  Click on the ‘Create Credential’ button.   Few questions will be asked, such as, Which API will be used, the API will be called from where, which data to access. Type in the required answers.
  6. Next, go to the ‘What Credentials do I need’ section? Herein, type the client ID and click on the ‘Create OAuth Client ID.’ Enter your email address and product name (that is, Google Assistant) to be shown to the user.  Then click on ‘Continue.’
  7. The option to download credentials will be given. So, download it and save it in the system.
  8. Once it is completed, click on ‘Done’ and then open the ‘Activity Controls.  Toggle on all the activity controls.

Then, the second part in the Google Assistant installation process for Windows 7 & 10 is:

  1. Press the Windows Key+ X, then select the command prompt as Admin.
  2. Type the following Command and press ‘Enter’ after each Command: Py -m pip install google-assistant-sdk{samples}, pip install -upgrade google-auth-oauthlib{tool}
  3. Depending upon your internet speed, the required dependencies for the Google Cloud project will be downloaded in a few minutes. The screen will show this message.

  1. The actual path and name of the JSON file should be mentioned. So, correct the ‘path/to/XXXXX.json’ and then run the Command.  For this, go to the JSON file location that was downloaded earlier. Right-click on it, and ‘select properties.  In the name field, copy the file name and post it in the notepad. This can then be copied and easily replaced in this step.
  2. A URL will now be received.  Copy the URL and post it on the browser.  After selecting the same Google Account, which was used for configuring the Google Assistant API, an authentication code will be received. Sometimes you need to click on the ‘Allow’ button to grant the necessary permissions to run Google Assistant.
  3. Copy-paste the authentication code into the command prompt.  Press the ‘Enter key. You will get a message stating: your credentials have been saved’.
  4. To check if the Google Assistant is working or not, run the following Command in cmd: Python -m googlesamples. assistant. audio helpers.  If you have already turned ON the system speakers, this command prompt will record 5 seconds of audio and play it back. Another alternative command is googlesamples-assistant-audiotest –record-time 10.
  5. If it’s successful, then in the next step, type the following: Python -m googlesamples. assistant.  Wait for a few seconds, and a message will appear on the screen saying, ‘press enter to send a new request.’ Press the enter button.  Sometimes some warning messages might appear, which can be ignored.  Please note that to start using Google Assistant, you need first to use the Wake command.

Conclusion:

As shown in the above steps, there is no direct or simple way to install Google Assistant on Windows 7 & 10.   But once it is installed, it performs excellently like Microsoft’s Cortona or Amazon’s Alexa.

There are other ways to download Google Assistant for PC or Mac, such as using Blue Stacks App, which is a bit easier.
